Consuming Lean Protein As A Vegan Is Achievable

As we have seen above and indeed as weve covered in various areas of the site it is really not difficult for those on a plant-based diet to consume adequate amounts of protein, at least in terms of basic health requirements. It becomes a little trickier for those seeking plenty of lean vegan protein, that is food that is high in protein but low in carbs.

But as detailed above, thats not such a problem if you put in even a little time and effort. Of course, making a few shrewd substitutions to your everyday diet could also help. For instance, instead of having rice with your vegan chilli, opt for a grain with more protein and fewer carbs, such as quinoa, or even lentils. Lentils and quinoa are not truly low carb but compared to rice, especially white rice, they have far more protein and less carbohydrates. Or you could go super-low carb, whilst retaining the protein of the chilli itself, by replacing the normal rice with cauliflower rice, or even cabbage rice.

Ultimately, there are infinite ways to combine those high-protein, low-carb foods mentioned above and a whole host of others you will no doubt encounter. And, there is certainly never a need to resort to eggs, dairy or, especially, meat to get the required amounts of protein. If youre seeking more protein than your average person, there is always the option to plump for vegan protein powders, shakes or bars.

May Help With Parkinsons Disease Symptoms

Fava beans are rich in levodopa , a compound that your body converts to the neurotransmitter dopamine .

Parkinsons disease causes the death of dopamine-producing brain cells, leading to tremors, issues with motor function and difficulty walking. These symptoms are usually treated with medications that contain L-dopa .

Therefore, eating fava beans may help with symptoms of Parkinsons disease, though research is limited.

A small study in 11 people with Parkinsons disease found that eating 1.5 cups of fava beans after 12 hours without medication had a comparable positive effect on blood dopamine levels and motor function as L-dopa drugs .

Another study in 6 adults with Parkinsons disease showed that consuming 100200 grams about 11.75 cups of fava beans with the anti-Parkinsons medication carbidopa improved symptoms as well as traditional drug combinations .

While these results are promising, more research is needed. Keep in mind that even though fava beans are rich in L-dopa, they should not be used in place of medications.

Fava beans are rich in L-dopa, which your body converts to dopamine. Since Parkinsons disease is characterized by low dopamine levels, eating fava beans may help with symptoms. Still, more research on this topic is needed.

    What About Protein Supplements

Some protein powders are plant-based. Depending upon the plants used to make the powders, they may be complete or incomplete proteins.

The position of the American Dietetic Association is that while food supplements can help people meet their daily nutrition goals, eating a wide variety of nutrients rich in protein is usually a better strategy for meeting daily goals.

Some protein supplements may also be high in sugar or sodium to improve the taste, so it is important to read the nutrition labels.

How Much Protein Should You Eat

Firstly – how much protein should an average adult actually be eating? There’s no point in telling you that a meal contains 30 grams of protein, unless you know how much protein we’re actually meant to aim for. Is 30 grams a lot or a little?!

Obviously, all bodies are different, so there’s not one simple answer to the question of how much protein we should eat. There are various ways to determine how much protein you should be eating – you can see a few different methods detailed here.

If you can’t be bothered to do any calculations, the NHS recommends a very rough daily intake of 50g protein.

Or, if you want something a bit more personalised, I think the simplest method is to calculate a number to aim for each day, based on your own body.

Most adults need to eat at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, every day. One kilogram is the same as 2.2 pounds, so if you only know your weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 to get your weight in kilograms.

So, as an example: A fairly average female weight is around 150 pounds, or 68 kilograms. Multiply 68 by 0.8, and you’ll find that this person would need to aim for at least 54.4 grams of protein each day.

Use this number as a general guide – it’s not the end of the world if you don’t hit it every single day, as long as it averages out over a week or so.

Despite what some people may think, there are many ways to get enough protein on a vegan or vegetarian diet.

However, not all plant-based proteins are complete proteins, meaning protein sources that contain adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. While your body can make some of them, nine have to be obtained through your diet. These are referred to as essential amino acids and include (

Animal products like beef, fish, dairy, and eggs contain enough of every one of these essential amino acids. Thus, theyre considered complete proteins .

However, many plant sources of protein are too low in or missing one or more of these essential amino acids. Theyre considered incomplete protein sources.

Still, given that plant foods contain varying amounts of amino acids, you can manage to get enough of each essential amino acid throughout the day by eating a varied diet and combining complementary plant proteins .

For example, grains like rice are too low in lysine to be considered a complete source of protein. Yet, by also eating lentils or beans, which are higher in lysine, throughout the day, you can be sure to obtain all nine essential amino acids .

Here are 13 nearly complete protein sources for vegetarians and vegans.

The cells present in the skin, blood, and digestive system begin to perish after a couple of weeks. After this, the protein begins to create and replenish new and healthy cells to replace the deceased ones.
