Type 1 Vs Type 2 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes A person with type 1 diabetes does not produce insulin. Unfortunately, type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented or cured. A person living with type 1 diabetes is required to have insulin injected into the body regularly.
Type 2 Diabetes People with type 2 diabetes can easily manage their condition through exercise and proper diet. Unlike individuals with type 1 diabetes, people with type 2 diabetes are still able to produce insulin. Their bodies simply dont make enough of it or have difficulty using it.
Either way, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and consuming highly nutritious food that doesnt spike blood sugar levels is key to prevention and management of diabetes.
What Are Protein Shakes
A protein shake is a drink made from protein powder blended with water or another liquid such as milk or a milk substitute.
Protein powder is a substance that contains high levels of protein from plant or animal sources. Whey protein powder, which comes from the cheese-making process, is a favorite product in the fitness world.
Alternatively, you can opt for plant-based protein powder derived from different plant proteins, such as pea, soy, and hemp.
The protein powder may contain additional vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids, depending on the brand. Many are manufactured as meal replacement shakes because they contain essential nutrients.
Shakes are a popular protein supplement that many people consume to gain weight, increase muscle mass, or enhance energy levels. They also help boost the protein intake of those who do not get enough protein from food alone.
The protein drink is similar in texture to a milkshake. Its a thick, filling beverage in various flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. You can also add other ingredients to a homemade protein shake, like fruit, vegetables, and yogurt.
What The Research Suggests
Dr. Gianchandani said that the study goes to show that lifestyle interventions can be better than adding another medication to a patients treatment plan.
Each drug has costs and side effects. Often, lifestyle changes can have similar effects to a drug, e.g., reducing salt for hypertension, she said.
he addition of protein early may slow the glucose absorption, provide satiety and a feeling of fullness as was described by some of this studys participants. This could have other benefits than just the reduction in the longer run. Dr. Roma Gianchandani
Dr. Isaacs also noted, Considering that this intervention reduced hyperglycemia by 8%, there is a possibility that this could lead to less medication use.
However, Dr. Isaacs pointed out that the study was conducted over seven days, which does not show whether this effect would be sustained over time, including peoples willingness to drink three shots a day long-term.
She also said that the study included only people of white, European descent, and did not include people taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, DPP 4 inhibitors, or insulin.
While the results are exciting, Dr. Isaacs cautioned, larger studies incorporating more diverse populations over a longer period of time are needed to confirm these results and determine if they can be sustained and applicable to a more general population with type 2 diabetes.

Effects Of Long Term Consumption Of Whey Protein On Glycaemic Control
High protein diets induce weight loss and preserve lean mass. However, there is a paucity of data relating to whether whey has the capacity to reduce glycated haemoglobin with ongoing treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes.
A 5-wk study in 8 men with type 2 diabetes showed that a diet containing 30% vs 15% of total energy derived from protein, with a corresponding decrease in carbohydrate content, was associated with a greater decrease in glycated haemoglobin. In another study, 72 non-diabetic obese men were randomised to receive supplements of either whey protein isolate, casein, or glucose , 30 min before breakfast and the evening meal for 12 wk. Improvements in fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance score of almost 10% were observed with whey compared to control, but there was no difference in the fasting serum glucose.
In considering the use of whey protein in the management of diabetes, it is also important to recognise the potential adverse effects of longer term supplementation. There have been concerns that high protein diets could potentially reduce bone density and impair renal function. However, a recent two year weight loss study in postmenopausal women found no clinically significant effect of a high protein diet on bone density nor was there any reduction in renal function in a one year weight loss study in patients with type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria, assigned to a high protein diet .

Protein Supplement Or Zinc Supplement
Zinc has been widely cited as an important mineral in blood glucose control in diabetics, especially after the publication of recent studies such as that reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
This research has shown that when insulin is lacking in diabetic patients, zinc may be able to supply some of the blood glucose control.
In any case, supplementation should only be done under the guidance of a health professional. For, even if zinc has a marked participation in glycemic control, it is necessary to understand that we are talking about ongoing studies and there are data that need further tests.

I recently had my gallbladder removed in May and could barely eat solid foods and lost a lot of weight. Boost protein shakes literally got me through until I had the surgery and through recovery. I recently purchased again after having recurring symptoms that caused lots of pain, discomfort, and weight loss.
This is the first thing I grab when I notice my off eating habits, and I couldnt be any happier.

Although Protein Shakes May Be Safe For Diabetics Still Use Caution
As diabetics we should have frequent checkups and tests conducted. If you are a diabetic and consume high levels of protein daily then kidney tests such as ACR and GFR should be at least every 3 months. ACR and GFR . GFR is a measure of your kidney functions and is performed through a blood test. Your GFR will determine if you have any kidney disease and what stage. ACR is a urine test to see how much albumin is in your urine. Too much albumin in your urine is an early sign of kidney damage.
Like any other food or dietary supplement, moderation is key. Consuming more than 200 grams of protein each day can exceed the livers ability to turn excess nitrogen to urea. This can lead to nausea, diarrhea, and other adverse side effects in some individuals. As a diabetic it makes no sense to put your body under the unnecessary strain of processing extremely high amounts of protein or any other supplement for that matter. Although protein powder may be safe for diabetics, dont over do it. You can still grow muscle with a moderate protein intake. Also be sure to take breaks from consuming protein powder. Its always a good idea to cleanse your body of processed foods and chemicals from time to time.

We are familiar with the three major macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The importance of collagen in maintaining healthy skin and hair, as well as in assisting with muscle repair, recovery, and development has been extensively studied.

Protein, in addition to assisting the body’s growth, can be broken down to glucose and used as a form of energy. Because it is broken down in a different or longer pathway than carbohydrates, the effect of protein on blood can appear anywhere between a few hours and several hours after eating. Because individuals with diabetes have insulin insufficiency, they must pay special attention to the probable effects of protein.
