Why Wet Foods Are More Appealing To Dogs

Compared to factory-made dry kibble pellets

Wet foods are cooked at much lower temperatures. So, they avoid the damage done to delicate vitamins and nutrients during processing.1

Which also makes them more likely to retain their natural flavor, too.

And unlike dry kibble, which contains just 10% water

Wet dog foods have a natural moisture content of about 75% more like the healthy human food found in your home refrigerator.

Which also makes them more attractive to picky eaters.

And its also WHY youll find so many wet recipes on our list below.

How Much Protein Do Toddlers And Kids Need

You can relax a bit about your child’s protein requirements. According to the United States Department of Agriculture , children need the following amounts of protein:

  • 1- to 3-year-olds: 13 grams of protein daily
  • 4- to 5-year-olds: 19 g of protein daily

To put things in perspective:

  • One egg has about 7 g of protein
  • One cup of milk has about 8 g
  • Half a cup of yogurt has about 5 g
  • One tablespoon of peanut butter has about 4 g

A typical serving of protein for a toddler is half an egg, half a cup of milk, one-third cup of yogurt or one tablespoon of peanut butter so if you space out four or five little protein servings over the course of a day, you’ll meet that protein quota easily.

Ways To Get More Protein Into A Picky Toddlers Diet

My 21 month old son is a picky eater. In terms of protein, he eats one particular brand of chicken tenders, cooked crispy but not too crispy. He refuses any other forms of meat, poultry, fish and eggs.

Of course, he would eat copious amounts of dairy if Id let him, but Ive discovered dairy causes eczema patches and runny poops. So whats a mom to do?

Here are 8 ways to incorporate more dairy-free, soy-free protein into your childs diet.

1.) Quinoa, Hemp or Almond milk are great substitutes for cows milk. They contain only about half the protein of cows milk, but its a good way to transition a kid off of milk or just change it up every now and then. And make sure you choose unsweetened to avoid added sugars. The vanilla flavors are usually well tolerated. So Delicious actually makes a protein-fortified almond milk that contains brown rice and pea protein for 5g of protein per cup.

2.) Hummus or white bean dips are great options for kids who like to dip. You can serve with bell peppers and baby carrots, or spread them onto sliced cucumbers.

3.) Nut butters contain a decent amount of protein about as much as an egg per 2 tablespoons. Try spreading them onto whole grain or GF toast, or slicing apples for dipping.

6.) Turkey Meatballs Moms rave about Jessica Albas Turkey Meatballs, which hide veggies like carrots, zucchini and onions.

7.) Dinner Sausage

What I Eat in a Day | High Protein Vegan Easy Dinner Recipes

Along with carbohydrates, fats, water, minerals, and vitamins, protein is an essential nutrient your pet needs. Although dogs are not carnivores, they still need a certain amount of protein to thrive and maintain their muscles.

The nutritional needs for dogs change over time and it also depends on your dogs age, size, breed, and activity level. You should provide your dog with the right amount of essential nutrients for their good health and growth. So what kind of dogs need to use protein dog food? The answer is all of them. But how much protein your dog needs should match the kind of dogs you raise.

  • Puppies need plenty of protein to grow constantly and gain a healthy optimal development. They are active so they need the energy to burn up as they play, romp, and get into mischief. It is a reason why puppies need more protein than adult dogs.
  • An adult dog has a wide range of nutritional or protein needs. A working dog or active dog benefits from high protein dog food while ones that take a short walk daily need less protein. In general, an adult dog needs between 20 and 35% protein.
  • Overweight pets require a lower fat, protein, and carbohydrate diet. So if your dog has overweight issues, you should consult the vet for the proper diet.

Can You Have Smoothies Instead Of Meals

    High

Smoothies and shakes are a great option for kids and adults alike. Their consistency allows them to be offered to younger kids without concern for choking, and they can take on a multitude of flavors and colors, which is fun for kids.

Though tempting during picky eating phases, smoothies, shakes, and nutritional drinks for kids should not be used as a meal replacement when your child is refusing their plate. Rather, smoothies and shakes are ideal for between-meal snacks, to complement a balanced meal, or to offer as an after-dinner dessert or bedtime snack to fill little tummies.

One of the most important nutritional goals for kids is to help them learn to meet their needs through a variety of solid foods, which can include smoothies, but they shouldnt be the star of the show.

Should Your Child Take Protein Supplements

Your child may not need supplements as long as they are getting proteins through natural food sources. Do not give protein supplements to your child without the doctors advice. Here are some facts you should know about protein supplements:

    • Contrary to popular belief, a child who is physically active or trying to put on muscle mass does not need to consume extra protein.
    • Although many dietary supplements are made from natural sources, it does not necessarily mean they are safe.
    • Federal regulations for dietary supplements like protein powders, drinks, or protein bars are less strict than prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
    • Supplements may be of poor quality with contaminants such as chemicals or drugs. Studies have proven that there are differences between whats on the label and the actual content.
    • If the supplements are really necessary, the childs doctor will recommend them accordingly.

Children need a balanced diet that contains all the essential nutrients. Remember, there are no shortcuts for the healthy growth of your child. So follow the principle of moderation and variety and plan a wholesome high-quality protein diet for your growing child.

    Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

Another product I recommend is Vital Proteins Unflavored Collagen Peptides. Collagen peptides are a great way to up the protein content of the food youre serving, but one serving does contain 18 grams of protein, so make sure it isnt making your childs protein intake too high. For a toddler or young child, Id recommend about ½ of one scoop, which would be closer to 4 or 5 grams of protein.

Because their collagen is sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows, its soluble in many foods and liquids. And, its completely flavorless, which makes it a great add-in for smoothies, yogurt , or applesauce. I often add it to my kids food when they are sick and I want to get a little extra in them because their appetite is low. Try blending it with frozen bananas and a splash of milk to make nice cream when they have a cold or a virus!
