How Homemade Gluten Free Protein Bars Came To Be

My kids play a lot of sports. That means that were often on the run, so they eat a lot of protein bars.

And of course, each kid has his or her own favorite variety of bar. But all those packaged protein bars have one thing in common: theyre crazy expensive.

This recipe for homemade protein bars started out as something I was just making for my family, and that was that. After much hesitation, I had finally purchased some Vega Essentials protein powder.

I mean, they even sell protein powder at CVS now! I could use a coupon! I was just playing around with it.

Thats the kind of experimenting I rarely get to do anymore, where I just throw a bit of this and a bit of that into a recipe. Very few notes, even fewer apologies.

Dont Just Leave Out An Ingredient

There are lots of ways to customize these protein bars to your familys tastes and nutritional needs. Theres no chemical reaction happening, since these bars are no-bake, so the mixture must have a certain texture right out of the food processor.

We want the bars to hold together well, so youll need ingredients that provide structure, and ingredients that bind the bars together. Plus, you need a protein powder, since these are protein bars after all!

Plus if you can use 5 ingredients to make protein bars, all which are likely in your kitchen, why wouldnt you?! Oh, and did you know that you can save money by making your own protein bars? Tips For Making Homemade Protein Bars

  • Wet your hands with water or oil when handling the batter. Because of the sticky nature of using dates to sweeten the recipe, it will be very sticky so this tip will help you manage the dough.
  • Use your hands for mixing the chocolate chips into the batter. Once you pulse everything in the food processor, it helps to use your hands for folding in the chocolate chips because its much easier. It also allows you to mix in anything the food processor missed.
  • Set the batter in an 8×8 baking pan with straight edges. This size and the straight edges will help you form the best looking protein bars that look like the packaged ones.
  • Soften dates with warm water if necessary. If you have very fresh dates that feel soft, you wont need to do this. However, if the dates are older or feel more tough, softening them will help them more easily blend and bind to the other ingredients.

    • Make sure they are gluten free to avoid cross contamination with wheat or gluten in general.
    • Use a high-quality collagen peptides brand that uses a trusted source and tests their product to ensure quality. Get 10% off my favorite collagen peptides brand.
    • Youll need approximately 1/2 a large banana, mashed, for this recipe. If youre going to use frozen, make sure that its defrosted.
    • Coconut is technically fruit but according to the FDA its a tree nut. Confusing. I now. But most people that react to tree nuts dont react to coconut . Maple sugar is another good substitute if you cant tolerate coconut sugar.
    • Avocado oil is a good substitute for coconut oil if you need to keep it completely nut free.

Papa Steves No Junk Raw Protein Bars

Healthy, vegan protein bar recipe | Vegan, Gluten Free, NO added sugar

When it comes to finding a decent soy-free vegan protein bar with 16 grams of raw vegan protein, Papa Steves No Junk Raw Protein Bars are hard to beat.

As their name suggests, Papa Steves bars are made with only the finest ingredients that are, wherever possible, locally sourced, which is a good thing for a number of reasons.

First off, they taste a lot better than your average high protein bar.

Second, the ingredients used are pretty much all beneficial to your overall health, so youre getting a little more than just a mere protein boost.

Third, youre helping smaller, more artisan businesses thrive by keeping things local. All of which adds up to a pretty good deal.

Naturally, you cant expect all this for nothing, so you will probably find that youll pay a little more for Papa Steves No Junk than you would other dairy-free protein bars, but you do get what you pay for.

Other than price, my only concern is the fact that these are a little on the high side when it comes to calories and fat , but they do counter that with a wonderful 16g of fiber and a tiny amount of sodium . All in all, I really like Papa Steves!

The Definition Of A Protein Bar

So, what is a protein bar and how does it differ from a candy bar? Protein bars are smallish food bars that, unsurprisingly, contain high amounts of protein. You will find a multitude of varieties on the shelves, including different types and flavors, all of which will give you lots of options to fit in with your taste and diet.

For non-vegan bars, the protein added will generally come from milk or whey, whereas dairy-free protein bars will commonly use pea, brown rice, or soy protein. These proteins are largely added in powdered form, which allows manufacturers to pack in a whole lot of protein into one tiny little bar of goodness.

The idea behind the manufacturing of these snacks is simple to produce a product that gives people a easy way to increase their protein intake. This is definitely a product of convenience for those that would prefer to grab a quick snack instead of making a protein-rich smoothie or cook something from scratch, but thats okay.
