How Serious Is Proteinuria

Protein in my urine: Should I Worry?

However, if you have proteinuria, you may notice urine that appears frothy, or you may experience swelling in the body . Proteinuria is usually detected during a simple urine analysis. Proteinuria is a serious medical condition. Left untreated, proteinuria may lead to serious or life-threatening conditions.

What Happens If You Have Proteinuria

Protein gets into your pee if your kidneys arent working correctly.

Glomeruli are groups of tiny blood vessels in your kidneys. They perform the first stage of filtering waste products and excess water from your blood. The waste products and excess water leave your body through your pee. Glomeruli dont allow passage of larger proteins or blood cells into your pee. If smaller proteins sneak through your glomeruli, then long, thin tubes in your kidneys recover the proteins and keep them in your body.

Proteins may flow into your pee if theres:

  • Damage to your glomeruli or tubules.
  • A problem with the reabsorption process of the proteins.

Is There A Way To Prevent Protein In The Urine During Pregnancy

Since protein in the urine in early pregnancy is associated with preexisting conditions, some of which are genetic, you cant necessarily do anything for prevention. Theres no current evidence to suggest anything clear-cut that will prevent preeclampsia.

However, its always a good idea to take certain preventative measures before becoming pregnant, especially if you have preexisting conditions. Check in with your doctor about what a healthy weight is for you, try to maintain a diet with plenty of lean protein and vegetables, and make sure your blood pressure is well managed.

And if youre already pregnant, doctors do suggest a couple of methods to potentially lower your risk of developing preeclampsia:

  • Taking low-dose aspirin if you have a history of preeclampsia, pregnancy with multiples, chronic high blood pressure, or other health issues, like kidney disease or diabetes. The recommended dosage is 81 milligrams starting at week 12 in pregnancy. However, since aspirin is available over-the-counter, we do need to add: Dont do this without your doctors guidance.
  • Taking calcium supplements if you have a calcium deficiency may also prevent preeclampsia. However, its rare in developed countries to have a deficiency severe enough for this method to provide a notable benefit.

Remember: If this is your first pregnancy, youre at a higher risk of developing preeclampsia. And you may be more likely to experience this complication if you had it in a previous pregnancy.

Can You Smell Protein In Urine

Similarly, foods high in protein can increase urine’s acidic properties and cause it to have an ammonia smell. When diet is the cause of ammonia-smelling urine, the odor disappears once a person eliminates food triggers from their diet. Odor caused by something a person has eaten is usually nothing to worry about.

Protein In Urine : Causes, Picture, Symptoms and Treatment

Yes, protein in your urine is serious. Proteinuria may increase your risk of death from heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

Occasionally, proteinuria is an early sign of chronic kidney disease , although you can have CKD and have normal levels of protein in your urine. CKD is a gradual loss of your kidney functions, which may eventually require a kidney replacement therapy, dialysis or kidney transplant. Diabetes and high blood pressure pressure can damage your kidneys. Theyre the two most common causes of kidney disease.

In children who are potty-trained, you should start the collection on a day when your child doesn’t go to school, usually on a Sunday. As soon as your child gets out of bed in the morning, have him or her urinate into the toilet. This urine is not saved just flush it down the toilet. Write down the exact time your child urinates.

After this, whenever your child needs to urinate, have your child urinate in the special container the doctor or the laboratory gives you. For girls, collect the urine first in a urine âhat,â then pour it into the special container. You don’t need to mark the times when these urine samples are collected.

It’s important to collect all the urine your child produces all day and in the night. The next morning, wake your child up at about the same time as you did the day before. Have your child urinate into the container one last time. This ends the 24-hour collection. Now write the date and the time on the container label. Bring the container to the laboratory on this day. Since bacteria can grow in urine at room temperature, it’s important to keep the urine container in a refrigerator during the collection and before you deliver it to the laboratory. Be sure to wash your hands after handling the container.

Are Eggs High In Protein

Is the protein in my urine due to kidney disease? [Viewer Question]

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, with a single large egg containing six grams of it. Eggs also contain all the essential amino acids in the right ratios, so your body is well-equipped to make full use of the protein in them.

Your diet should consist of 15-20% protein if you have symptoms of Proteinuria. Long-term damage to your kidneys may be corrected by restricting protein, if you are diabetic, or experiencing kidney problems. Increase fresh vegetables and fiber intake – Up to 55 grams of fiber per day is recommended.

What Is A High Number For Protein In Urine

The amount of protein present in the urine sample excreted over 24-hours is used to diagnose the condition. More than 2 g of protein is considered to be severe and is likely to be caused by a glomerular malfunction.

What does proteinuria 2+ mean?

Proteinuria is described based on the following scale: 2+ = 500 1500 mg/24 hours. 3+ = over 2500 mg/24 hours. 4+ = over 3000 mg/24 hours.

What number should protein in urine be?

Urine protein tests detect and/or measure protein being released into the urine. Normal urine protein elimination is less than 150 mg/day and less than 30 mg of albumin/day. Elevated levels may be seen temporarily with conditions such as infections, stress, pregnancy, diet, cold exposure, or heavy exercise.

What does 3+ protein in urine indicate?

If there is a problem with your kidneys, protein can leak into your urine. While a small amount is normal, a large amount of protein in urine may indicate kidney disease.

Does Kidney Damage Go Away

WellScript, LLC: October 2016

In general, it does not. The goal is to detect kidney disease and damage early to minimize the damage and prolong kidney function. If the proteinuria detected is due to a kidney infection or urinary tract infection, the kidneys frequently will return to normal function as the infection resolves. If it is due to a medication, then in most cases the kidneys are likely to return to normal or near-normal function when the medication is stopped.

Why Is Urine Albumin Important

Measurement of urine albumin is an important tool for

  • diagnosing kidney disease
  • monitoring the progression of kidney disease

Health care providers regularly test people for albuminuria as part of a routine medical exam and will closely monitor urine albumin in people with kidney disease.

A urine albumin level that stays the same or goes down may mean that treatments are working. Treatment that lowers the urine albumin level may lower the chances that kidney disease will progress to kidney failure.

People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or a family history of kidney failure are at risk for kidney disease. Talk with your health care provider about how often you should get a urine test for albumin.

What If Proteinuria Is Present Without Inflammation Or Bleeding

If proteinuria is present and there is no sign of inflammation or bleeding, then serious kidney disease may exist. The best test to determine the severity of the problem is the urine protein:creatinine ratio . A protein:creatinine ratio that remains persistently high is a reliable indicator of serious kidney disease and possibly kidney failure. Further investigation is recommended and could include doing blood tests to assess kidney function, testing for bacterial infection or infectious disease, performing an ultrasound of the kidneys and possibly doing a kidney biopsy. Once a diagnosis has been made, effective management of the problem may be possible.

How Is Protein In The Urine Used As Part Of A Preeclampsia Diagnosis

Protein in the urine alone doesnt mean you have preeclampsia. In fact, you can have preeclampsia and not have any protein in your urine. Doctors must look at various signs and symptoms to make an accurate diagnosis.

Again, preeclampsia usually occurs in the second half of pregnancy, after week 20. It can rarely occur earlier or occasionally in the postpartum period.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • pulmonary edema
  • new vision issues

Doctors consider a blood pressure reading higher than 140/90 mm Hg to be high during pregnancy. But again a high reading doesnt always mean you have preeclampsia. Your doctor will look at the trend in your numbers compared to your baseline to help with diagnosis.

Testing might include:

  • Blood tests to evaluate your liver function, kidney function, and the number of platelets in your blood.
  • 24-hour urine collection to observe protein in your urine throughout an entire day.
  • Ultrasound to monitor your babys development and the amount of amniotic fluid in your uterus.
  • Nonstress tests or biophysical profiles to evaluate your babys health status. These can reveal babys heart rate with relation to their movements and their breathing and muscle tone.

What Questions Should I Ask My Healthcare Provider

Does protein in urine mean kidney damage? Are bubbles in urine normal?
  • How do you know I have proteinuria?
  • What condition caused me to develop proteinuria?
  • What tests do you recommend?
  • Do I have mild or temporary proteinuria?
  • What medications or treatments do you recommend?
  • Should I make any changes to my diet or lifestyle?
  • If I dont have proteinuria, what other condition might I have?

Foamy Urine As A Sign Of Proteinuria

While foamy or frothy urine can be a sign of proteinuria, other factors can cause urine to be foamy on occasion. The foaminess should be persistent over time before considering other causes, like decreased kidney function.

If the kidneys have sustained only mild damage, proteinuria may be minimal to moderate, depending upon where in the kidney the damage has occurred. On the other hand, if the loss of kidney function is severe, proteinuria may be a contributor to nephrotic syndrome in which fluids and dyslipidemia present a more serious condition.

Symptoms of nephrotic syndrome include:

Protein In Urine Symptoms

Most people who have proteinuria wonât notice any signs, especially in early or mild cases. Over time, as it gets worse, you might have symptoms including:

  • Foamy or bubbly pee
  • A family history of kidney disease
  • African American, Native American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander descent

Some people get more protein into their urine while standing than while lying down. This condition is called orthostatic proteinuria.

How Often Do I Need To Have A Test For Albuminuria

People who are at increased risk for kidney disease should have this test as part of routine checkups by a healthcare provider. Those at increased risk include:

  • People with diabetes

  • People with high blood pressure

  • People with a family history of kidney failure

  • People who are 65 years or older

  • Certain ethnic groups including African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, American Indians

What Are The Symptoms Of Protein In Urine

Protein In Urine Positive

When a person first begins to have kidney problems, they may not notice any symptoms. This is why a urine test can be essential to detect protein in the urine, which may indicate early signs of kidney disease.

In addition to proteinuria, symptoms of kidney disease can include:

  • Foamy or frothy urine
  • Trouble concentrating

If you are pregnant, protein in urine can also be a sign of preeclampsia, a very dangerous condition that can cause high blood pressure and lead to hospitalization. Additional signs of preeclampsia can include headaches, vision changes, abdominal pain, nausea, decreased urine output, and shortness of breath.

What Testing Will Your Doctor Order

The initial test of your urine at your doctors office is called a dipstick test. A strip is inserted into your urine and chemical patches react by changing color depending on the amount of protein detected. The range of results goes from + to ++++ or low to high .

If your result is above normal, your doctor may give you a 24-hour urine protein test to monitor your levels more closely over a longer period. Your urine is collected throughout a days time and is analyzed. Morning urine is usually excluded from the test. A high result is considered abnormal and a possible sign of kidney or other health issues.

If only trace amounts are observed, your doctor may or may not order further testing. Or your doctor may use other signs and symptoms to move forward.

Trace amounts of protein can enter the urine if theyre too small to be filtered by the kidneys. In most cases, though, the protein molecules are usually too large to be filtered out.

What Causes Protein In The Urine During Pregnancy

Your kidneys are hard at work during pregnancy . They filter the waste products in your blood all while keeping things, like proteins, that your body needs to thrive. After being filtered, the waste is released into your urine.

If protein makes its way to the urine, thats usually because something isnt functioning quite right in the kidneys.

Outside of pregnancy, protein in the urine may be temporarily elevated due to:

  • emotional or physical stress
  • exposure to extreme temperatures

But there are other situations where protein in the urine may be a sign of something more.

Before 20 weeks of pregnancy, proteinuria is sometimes referred to as chronic proteinuria.

It may be due to underlying issues with the kidneys or other health conditions that arent necessarily related to your pregnancy, like heart disease. Infections may also elevate the protein levels in your urine and require medical attention.

After 20 weeks, on the other hand, doctors look more closely at protein as a possible indicator of preeclampsia. This condition is marked by high blood pressure and may cause damage to organs, particularly the liver and kidneys.

HELLP syndrome is a similar, yet more severe form of preeclampsia that may develop along with preeclampsia or all on its own.

Without treatment, both conditions may lead to serious complications for both you and baby.

Why Is This Test Performed

The protein urine test is a screening procedure usually performed to detect kidney disorders. The presence of protein in the urine is often associated with early renal disease.

However, protein may be present in the urine when there is no renal disease or damage. For example, it may be due to a transient condition such as strenuous exercise or dehydration.

There are also other diseases not related to kidney problems that may produce protein in urine.
