Causes Of Markedly Elevated Crp Levels
Most patients in this study had a diagnosis of infection. The proportion of cases caused by infection increased at higher CRP levels, and 88.9% of those presenting with a CRP level above 350 mg/L had an infection. Figure 1 outlines the most common infection sites.

What Diseases Does The Crp Test Help Rule Out
CRP tests dont automatically rule out any diseases, but they can lead rheumatologists in the right direction. A low CRP result would suggest that the symptoms probably dont come from an autoimmune condition like rheumatoid arthritis, says Dr. Kaplan, but doctors would need to check other factors for confirmation. You have to look at the whole picture you cant diagnose based on just one particular test, says Dr. Kaplan.
What Does A High Crp Level Mean
If you have a moderately to severely elevated CRP level, it probably means you have some type of inflammation. But a CRP test cant show the cause of the inflammation or where it is in your body. Because of this, your healthcare provider will likely order additional tests if your result shows a high CRP level.
How high your CRP level is can mean different things.
A CRP test result of 1.0 to 10.0 milligrams per deciliter is generally considered a moderately elevated level. This result may indicate any of the following conditions:
- Systemic inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis , systemic lupus erythematosus or other autoimmune conditions.
A CRP test result of more than 50 mg/dL is generally considered severe elevation. Results over 50 mg/L are associated with acute bacterial infections about 90% of the time.

Should I Be Concerned If My Crp Level Is Abnormal
If your CRP test results reveal that you have high levels of CRP, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a medical condition that needs treatment, especially if theyre only slightly elevated. Several factors, such as smoking, recent injury and certain health conditions, can raise your CRP levels. There couldve also been an error in the collection, transport or processing of the test.
If you have an abnormal result, your healthcare provider will discuss your results with you. They may order additional tests to determine the cause of your abnormal CRP levels.

With autoimmune disease, the body is treating healthy cells like invaders. That reaction causes inflammation, so high CRP levels tick one box for an autoimmune diagnosis. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. What Happens When You Have Periodontitis
Periodontitis causes your gums to become very inflamed. They may turn red, swell and bleed. The inflammation is so severe that pockets of air also develop between your gums and teeth.
Bacteria enter and flourish in these pockets, leading to infection below the gum line. Your immune system then starts to fight the infection. It eventually breaks down the tissue and bone holding teeth in place. This response can lead to the loss of teeth.

When Should You Have C
Checking the CRP level for the entire adult population is not recommended. Some experts recommend checking the serum CRP level routinely along with the cholesterol level however, although this is not widely accepted. Ideally, for cardiac risk testing, it is advisable to use the average between two separate CRP levels drawn two weeks part.
More importantly, the CRP level can provide additional information about an individual’s cardiovascular risk in conjunction with other known cardiac risk factors, such as,
- cholesterol-lowering medication.
People with elevated C-reactive protein levels may be advised by their treating doctors. Statin drugs are at the forefront of the recommended cholesterol-lowering agents. Lowering of CRP may be seen with the use of statin drugs even without significant improvement of the cholesterol profile.
Reduction of CRP level has also been noted in individuals with known cardiovascular disease who begin aspirin therapy. In those without known cardiovascular disease or significant risk factors for it, aspirin use is not generally recommended. Some diabetic medications have also been shown to reduce CRP levels in people with or without diabetes mellitus. This effect was seen independent of their glucose-lowering effects.
Who Is At Risk For Sepsis
Anyone with an infection could get sepsis. But certain people are at higher risk:
- Adults 65 or older
- Fever, shivering, or feeling very cold
- Clammy or sweaty skin

Aspirin therapy isn’t for everyone. Always talk to your healthcare provider before taking low-dose aspirin for daily therapy.

How Is Elevated C
There are two tests for CRP. One can detect a non-specific elevation of CRP that occurs with general inflammatory changes in the body. The other test, hs-CRP, is a measure of inflammation in blood vessels. This is the test utilized to help evaluate heart disease risk.
In quantifying cardiac risk, physicians look at a very narrow range of C-reactive protein levels, from zero to 3.0 and above. This requires a special test called high-sensitivity C-reactive protein , which may be able to reveal inflammation at the micro-vascular level. If this test shows that CRP is less than 1.0 mg per liter of blood, the risk of heart disease is considered low if it is between 1.0 and 3.0, the risk is average and if it is above 3.0, the risk is deemed high.
The Mayo Clinic suggests that hs-CRP testing is most useful for evaluating patients with an intermediate risk of heart disease, meaning a 10-20 percent risk of having a heart attack in the next 10 years. Those already known to be at higher risk wouldnt benefit from the test. While the Mayo Clinic doesnt advise routine hs-CRP testing in patients who are low risk for heart disease, some physicians, including Dr. Weil, believe that all adults should have an hs-CRP test whenever their cholesterol is tested.
