While Ghost’s Branding Might Be Hip We Were Also Pleasantly Surprised By The Nutrition In This Product

We receive free products and receive commissions through our links. See disclosures page.

Weve got a lot of protein powders on our shelves, but none of them stand out the way Ghost does. Most protein powders are housed in serious black tubs emblazoned with block letters and terms like ultra-premium and extreme muscle, but Ghost comes in a cream-colored tub with ghosts, monkeys, and funky, graffiti-like branding scrawled across it.

The brand, which overall is more focused on pre-workouts than protein, hopes to be the worlds first lifestyle sports nutrition brand and their website includes music playlists, fitness articles, and short documentaries about the founders. They dont just sponsor athletes, they sponsor DJs and entrepreneurs.

This protein powder comes in unique flavors like ice cream, toaster pastry, cereal milk, and more. Each rounded-single-scoop serving sports 25 grams of protein and 130 calories.

To sum it up, Ghost is cool, cool in a way that no other self-serious supplement company manages. The branding pops, and we were happy to find that the product itself held up: it delivers a lot of protein per calorie, it digests effectively, and its one of the few protein powders that taste great with water.

Iron Vegan Athletes Gainer

Type Of Protein: Organic pea protein + sprouted rice protein

Iron Vegan Athletes Gainer is similar to the Naked Vegan Mass Gainer I just mentioned. However, Iron Vegan uses higher-quality ingredients.

Its also flavored, so it doesnt taste quite as bland. That being said, the better ingredients come at a significantly higher cost, so be prepared to pay extra.

Iron Vegan vegan mass gainer is made using organic fermented pea protein powder combined with organic sprouted rice protein powder.

Instead of maltodextrin , Iron Vegan uses brown rice flour as a source of complex carbohydrates to stimulate weight gain.

Additionally, Iron Vegan mass gainer is loaded with healthy superfoods that provide additional plant-based protein, essential minerals, and healthy fiber to help you digest it all.

Organic spirulina, kale, spinach, pumpkin seeds, ancient grains, papaya, cinnamon, pineapple, beetroot, and ginger are just several of the superfoods in this meal replacement powder.

Each serving contains 120 grams of carbs, but only 1 gram of this comes from added sugar. Instead of using unhealthy sugars to sweeten this powder, Iron Vegan uses all-natural stevia leaf extract to ensure that youre only getting healthy complex carbs.

As far as the other macros go, each two-scoop serving contains 740 calories, 42 grams of plant-based protein, and 8 grams of fat, making it a viable mass gainer and meal replacement.

What Is Vegan Protein Powder

8 Vegan Protein Powders for Weight Loss The Vegan

There are dozens of different types of protein that can end up in protein powder. Powders typically consist of a blend of about six main protein sources, including whey, soy, collagen, egg and pea protein. Vegan protein powder is derived strictly from vegetarian sources and is completely void of dairy or other animal products, explains Vincent Pedre, M.D., medical director of Pedre Integrative Health in New York City and author of the bestselling book Happy Gut.

Traditional protein powders, including vegan options, come in three main varieties, says Dr. Pedre.

Protein concentrates are created by using heat and enzymes to extract the protein from the original source. Concentrates are typically about 70% pure protein and also contain fat and carbohydrates, which means they have more taste, says Dr. Pedre. When it comes to whey, for example, a concentrate will have dairy residues, which could be a problem for anyone who is dairy-sensitive. This might mean bloating and possibly even diarrhea after drinking the protein shake, he adds.

Protein isolates require an additional step to remove most of the carbohydrates and fat remaining from the concentrate. This leaves you with about 90% pure protein or more, says Dr. Pedre. In terms of whey protein, theres reduced risk of a reaction to dairy proteins, but youre not completely in the clear if you have a sensitivity to dairy, he says.

Can Vegan Protein Help You Lose Weight

Yes, vegan protein powder can help with your weight loss goals since it help you stay fuller for longer, it burns more calories when digesting it versus carbs and fats and it help you preserve muscle mass which is essential for a healthy metabolism.

That being said, the most important factor for weight loss is to create a consistent caloric deficit. Additionally, if you want to maintain muscle mass and promote fat loss, an exercise routine that prioritizes resistance training is key.

Vega Sport Premium Protein Powder

Type Of Protein: Pea protein + pumpkin seed protein + sunflower seed protein + alfalfa protein

Vega Sport Premium Protein Powder is one of my favorite vegan protein powders and mass gaining supplements. The base protein blend is made from four different sources of protein, which helps with absorption and provides a variety of naturally-occurring amino acids.

Its naturally sweetened and flavored with real cocoa powder, stevia extract, turmeric, black pepper, tart cherry powder, and vegan-friendly natural flavors.

It may sound like a bit of an odd combination, but together they create a vibrant, delicious chocolate flavor that tastes as it came straight out of the South American rainforest!

Each serving contains 160 calories, 3 grams of fat, 6 grams of complex carbs, and 30 grams of high-quality vegan protein. Its definitely a lower-calorie mass gainer, so if youre trying to pack on calories, then you may want to consume several servings per day.

Last but not least, Vega Sport Protein Powder contains added vegan probiotics, which make it great for your gut health and digestion!

Pros:

  • Combines four sources of plant-based protein.

When To Drink Protein Shakes For Weight Loss Female

There is no one definitive answer to this question. Some people swear by drinking protein shakes as part of a weight loss regimen, while others find them to be unhelpful or even counterproductive. If you are considering incorporating protein shakes into your weight loss plan, it is important to do your research and speak with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if they are right for you. Generally speaking, protein shakes can be beneficial for weight loss when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program. However, as with any weight loss strategy, results may vary from person to person.

It is not possible to lose weight by consuming protein shakes. Excess weight can be returned if you do not eat well and make smart food choices. When you use protein shakes to replace meals on a daily basis, you will miss out on the health benefits of whole foods. When you eat a healthy diet, you will most likely not need to supplement your protein intake with protein shakes or other sources of protein. You must burn more calories than you consume in order to lose weight. Eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, as well as avoiding too much food high in added sugars, salt, and saturated fat.

What To Look For In A Vegan Protein Powder

When hunting for vegan protein powder, consider the following major factors before you make your purchase.

  • Is your protein organic? Start by looking for a protein powder that is organic, recommends , RD, a New York-based dietitian and founder of MPM nutrition. Lots of the components to protein powder here can be contaminated with pesticide residue, she explains. So yup, be sure to check the label before you add to cart.
  • Is your protein complete? Usually, youll want to get a protein powder that contains a mix of different proteins, such as pea, rice, hemp, soy, etc., Meshulaum says. When you combine the proteins, you get a complete protein, she explains. Because ICYMI, most plant-based protein sources are incomplete, meaning they dont contain all ofor enough ofthe nine essential amino acids.
  • Is there *enough* protein?Youll also want to be sure the amount of protein in the shake is enough to help support your bodys needs, as well as allow you to feel satisfied after eating, explains Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, a New Jersey-based dietitian and author of 2 Day Diabetes Diet. Generally, look for a vegan protein powder with about 14 grams of protein or more per serving.

Ghost Whey Protein Taste

We tried a few different flavors. First of all, the milk chocolate flavor was excellent. Normally it takes a whole lot of artificial ingredients to make a protein powder that tastes great with water, but Ghost tastes fantastic with water. With whole milk, I found it just a little too sweet and creamy, but I think it would work really well with low-fat milk or almond milk.

Then we tried the cereal milk flavor, which is intended to taste like the milk thats leftover from a bowl of childrens cereal like Capn Crunch®. Thats pretty much what it tastes like some say that its like a vanilla flavor, but theres definitely a sweet, corn-like flavor too, like youd taste in Corn Pops®.

Finally, we tried the blueberry toaster pastry flavor. Personally, I find that blueberry-flavored protein powder can be pretty hit or miss but Ghosts protein was actually pretty good. It didnt make me think I was drinking actual blueberries, but it was pretty close.

And then there are the pastry pieces. Its actually got crunchy chunks of pastry throughout the whey, even though it only has one more gram of carbs and half a gram more of fat compared to the chocolate flavor. Its great, but dont chug it those pastry pieces wont feel great flying down your gullet.

Gnc Earth Genius Puredge Plant

Type Of Protein: Pea protein + white bean powder + brown rice protein + quinoa powder + algal protein + chia protein + flaxseed powder

If youre looking for one of the most diverse sources of healthy complex carbs and plant-based protein, then GNC Earth Genius PurEdge Plant-Based Vegan Gainer is as good as it gets.

Personally, Ive never taken a protein supplement or mass gainer that had as many sources of plant protein in one serving before I tried this product!

Like the Vegun Mass Gainer, GNCs vegan mass gainer is relatively low in calories and only contains 280 calories per two-scoop serving. It also contains 35 grams of complex carbs and 25 grams of plant-based protein.

In addition to the complex plant protein blend, GNC also includes a proprietary blend of herbs and fruit extracts to aid in digestion and muscle recovery.

Each serving includes zucchini powder, betaine , ancient peat extract, apple extract, bromelain , and papain .

Its also a rich source of essential nutrients, such as magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and potassium. Its relatively low-sodium as well! To top it all off, its flavored with all-natural cocoa powder and low-calorie organic sweeteners.

One of the most famous weight loss aids is protein shakes. These healthy drinks are designed to help you build muscle, which in turn boosts your body’s natural metabolism. Opt For Varied Protein Sources

The key to getting all of the different essential amino acids you need on a plant-based diet comes down to eating a variety of plant sources. Blended protein powders, which can include chia seeds, hemp, pumpkin and ancient grains, are a great way to easily get a mix.

“Plant-based proteins on their own are usually not complete proteins,” Cristopher says. “A complete protein means it has all nine essential amino acids needed for creating protein structures in the body.”

Check the nutritional info to see how many essential amino acids are included, and vary as needed.

The Benefits Of Using Vegan Protein Powder

Calculating the correct amount of protein you need depends on several factors your body weight, your age and how physically active you are. An average person will need 0.75g of protein per kg of body weight, increasing to 1-1.2g in the over-65s. People who train a lot will need even more about 1.2-2g per kg of body weight.

To boost your protein consumption Dr. Dehghan recommends starting with whole foods. The easy way to increase your protein intake is to start with regular food, she said. “You can easily increase your protein intake by just adding hemp seeds, tofu or any other protein source to your smoothies or meals.”

If you feel that you still want to add extra protein to your diet, then Dr. Dehghan lists soy and pea proteins as her first recommendations. Both have been around for a long time and most studies use soy or pea protein powders to compare with whey protein. Another one of my favorites is protein powders that use a combination of different protein sources, for example, pea and brown rice.
