Special Diet Notes & Options: Pumpkin Spice Protein Shake
More protein? For a pumpkin spice protein shake with even more oomph, you can double the protein powder, or, my favorite option, add a tablespoon of almond butter or pumpkin seed butter.
Banana allergy? I seem to get a lot of requests for banana-free smoothies! If you cant do bananas, I recommend increasing the pumpkin a bit and adding a couple pitted medjool dates along with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract and ice to reach your desired consistency. You may not need any stevia or additional sweetener in this version of the pumpkin spice protein shake as dates are quite sweet in their own right.

We all know fall is the time of the year for pumpkin spice everything. While I am a HUGE pumpkin spice fan, many times I hesitate to indulge in the many pumpkin-y treats around because they arent so good for me. If a pumpkin spice treat gets its flavor from some chemical concoction rather than from, I dont know PUMPKIN, Id rather pass. Ill just make my own Pumpkin Spice Protein Smoothie with real ingredients!
The key to a great protein smoothie is finding a protein powder that works for you. Im kind of picky about protein powders myself I prefer not to use soy and have been cutting back on dairy so Im also avoiding whey. With just that criteria, Ive now eliminated quite a few of the protein powders out there. Add in that I prefer organic and youd think there was no protein powder that fits my criteria, right? Wrong!
What makes Orgain Protein Powder so great? Mainly, it is organic. This is at the heart of what Orgain is. Orgain was created by Dr. Andrew Abraham, whose own experience seeking high-quality nutrition during his cancer treatment years ago inspired him to develop delicious nutrition products with the highest quality organic ingredients.
Also, Orgain is made of plant-based proteins that arent soy. Orgain Protein Powder is made from organic plant-based protein including brown rice, hemp, chia, and pea proteins. And it actually tastes good and has a creamy feel, unlike some other pea protein powders I tried.
Finding The Best Pumpkin Spice Protein Powderand Shakes
Yes, pumpkin spice is showing up in all sorts of foods . . . including protein powders and premixed shakes! This was great news to our staff of pumpkin spice enthusiasts, eager to try out these new options.
Some of our parent readers tell us they stir pumpkin spice protein shakes into coffee . . . while others add powder to smoothies.
As with most pumpkin spice foods, the flavors can vary. Some powders have flavor notes that are more cinnamon forward . . . others emphasize nutmeg. Any fan of pumpkin pie will tell you there are different ways to get to this classic taste.
We did a blind taste test with both shakes and powders. For the powders, we stirred these into vanilla smoothies. For the shakes, we tried them straight from the bottle and also mixed into coffee.
All in all, we tried out 11 different brands. In the end, only one pumpkin spice protein shake made the cutand three pumpkin spice protein powders also scored as winners.
Before we get to that, here is a recipe for a pumpkin spice protein latte using one of our recommended powders.

What Experts Say
If someone is looking for a vegetarian/vegan protein powder, then Orgain Plant Based Protein Powder is a good choice, says registered dietitian and Forbes Health Advisory Board member Toby Amidor. The protein comes from peas and rice, which provide a nice amino acid profile. It should be noted, however, that it is not third-party verified, which means that the Food and Drug Administration doesnt regulate supplements, and what is listed in the ingredient list isnt fact-checked by a third-party to know what is truly in there. This also means that I wouldnt recommend it for athletes.
She highlights this products inclusion of chia seedsa source of ALA omega-3sadding that its also an excellent source of iron, with 35% of the recommended daily amount.
But plant-based iron tends to be poorly absorbed, she says, adding that she recommends pairing Orgain with a beverage or side that has vitamin C, like in a smoothie with 100% orange juice, to better absorb the non-heme iron.
In regard to the symptoms that others have experienced , Amidor warns that the powder, has erythritol, which may cause GI distress in some folks. So, try it first in a smaller amount to check if you tolerate it okay.
