High quality protein combined with exercise can help build muscle. Eating within 3060 minutes of finishing exercise may be the most beneficial for building muscle. During this time, skeletal muscles make better use of nutrients in food than they do 3 hours after exercising.
The current recommended daily allowance for protein is set at a level that prevents muscle loss and provides the minimum required amino acids. Individuals seeking to gain muscle should be eating more than the RDA.
Active individuals may eat up to 2 g per kilogram body weight of protein per day. The most active individuals may go as high as 3.5 g per kg body weight. Eating high protein levels for long periods may cause digestive, renal, and vascular problems.
10-35% of total daily caloric intake. But since pregnant people need extra calories during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, the amount of protein they need to eat will be higher.
For teens under 18 who are pregnant, the RDA is 10-30% of total daily caloric intake from high quality protein sources.
How Much Protein I Have
In terms of how much protein I have, I dont really have a set daily target, but if I look through my MyFitnessPal history, its usually between 100 and 140 grams of protein per day.
I try and get some protein with each meal throughout the day.
And I do lean towards the higher end of the range thats recommended from all those various sources.
But a lot of that comes down to my own food preferences as well.
Protein does take a bit longer to break down the carbohydrates in the body. So you ended up feeling a bit fuller for longer, and also for me to gain pretty much any muscle mass, I need all the help I can get. So at the very least, I need to make sure Im getting enough protein in.

Optimal Daily Protein Intake For Healthy Sedentary Adults
For adults, the US Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is 0.8 g/kg. However, a more appropriate statistical analysis of the data used to establish the RDA suggests this number should be higher: 1.0 g/kg.
Note that, contrary to popular belief, the RDA doesnt represent an ideal intake. Instead, it represents the minimum intake needed to prevent malnutrition. Unfortunately, the RDA for protein was determined from nitrogen balance studies, which require that people eat experimental diets for weeks before measurements are taken. This provides ample time for the body to adapt to low protein intakes by down-regulating processes that are not necessary for survival but are necessary for optimal health, such as protein turnover and immune function.
An alternative method for determining protein requirements, called the Indicator Amino Acid Oxidation technique, overcomes many of the shortcomings of nitrogen balance studies. Notably, it allows for the assessment of protein requirements within 24 hours, thereby not leaving the body enough time to adapt. Studies using the IAAO method have suggested that about 1.2 g/kg is a more appropriate RDA for healthy young men, older men, and older women.
Further evidence that the current RDA for protein is not sufficient comes from a randomized controlled trial that confined healthy, sedentary adults to a metabolic ward for eight weeks. The participants were randomized into three groups:

When To Take Protein Powder

The Remainder Of Calories Should Come From Fat
After calculating your protein and carb intake, subtract that number from your total daily calorie allowance.
To find the number of calories per macro:
- Protein = 4 calories per gram
- Carbohydrates = 4 calories per gram
- Fats = 9 calories per gram
Fill in the rest of your calories from healthy fats.
If your macro goals are 100 grams of protein and 25 grams of carbohydrates with a 1,500 daily calorie allowance, calculate the following to find fat:
- #1 100g protein x 4 = 400 calories
- #2 25g carbohydrates x 4 = 100 calories
- #3 1,500 = 1,000 calories
- #4 Fat intake = 1,000 / 9 = 111g of fat
This macro breakdown for 1,500 calories comes out to:
- 100 grams of protein
- 25 grams of carbohydrates
- 111 grams of fat

How Much Protein After Exercise
After exercising, when your muscles are more sensitive to the anabolic effect of protein, take a dose in the range of your . If youve been exercising on an empty stomach, youll be in negative protein balance, so take this dose as soon as possible. So How Do I Use This Information
Now that you know the optimal split between calories from protein, carbs, and fat, its time to calculate the actual amounts you need in grams.
Start by calculating your daily calorie need, using the guidelines from this post. Lets say that you calculated a daily need of 2.000 calories. With a 40/40/20 energy split of protein, carbs, and fat, you would need:
- 800 calories from protein
- 800 calories from carbs
- 400 calories from fat
To calculate the amounts in grams, you divide by how many calories there are per gram in each macronutrient .
For a 2.000 calories diet, your daily amounts would be:
- 800 calories from protein / 4 = 200 g Protein
- 800 calories from carbs / 4 = 200 g carbs
- 400 calories from fat / 9 = 45 g fat
And there you have it! It may seem a little complicated at first, but when you do it step-by-step, its actually quite easy to calculate exactly how much protein, carbs, and fat you need in your diet.

Eating a banana, Greek yogurt and a hard-boiled egg will get you 19 grams of protein on average. A 3-ounce chicken breast with a half-cup rice and a half-cup of vegetables amounts to 25 grams protein. An egg and bean burrito with a glass of milk is about 28 grams of protein.
As you can see, it’s easy to get the recommended 1530 grams per meal. Most people even athletes can reach their protein needs by including a serving of dairy at each meal and a piece of meat the size of a deck of cards at lunch and supper.
Protein should accompany fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Protein should not be the entire meal. If you feel like you might have increased protein needs, consider adding more beans, lentils, soy or seafood rather than processed supplements.
