This cross-sectional study was conducted with data collected in NHANES and the dietary recall component known as What We Eat in America . The NHANES provides nationally representative nutrition and health data used to develop prevalence estimates for nutrition and health status measures in the U.S. and serves as the foundation of many nutrient assessments for national nutrition policy . Each NHANES cycle includes an in-person household interview, a health examination in a mobile examination center , and a telephone follow-up interview. Approval for the NHANES data collection was provided by the National Center for Health Statistics Research Ethics Review Board.

Pregnancy status was assessed with a urine pregnancy test during the MEC examination and women self-identified as pregnant reported month of pregnancy. More recent NHANES cycles have not included the question on month of pregnancy, thus this analysis was limited to survey cycles 20032004, 20052006, 20072008, 20092010, and 20112012. The sample population for this study was pregnant women ages 2044 years as identified by a positive urine pregnancy test , were not lactating , self-identified month of pregnancy , and provided two valid dietary recalls as determined by NCHS. The final sample of pregnant, non-lactating women included in this analysis is 528.

What Is The Best Form To Get Protein During Pregnancy

As with many nutrients, all forms of protein are not equal. The Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score ranks proteins by quality. Scores over 100 indicate that if a person were to fulfill their entire days protein needs with that food, 100 percent of their amino acid requirements would be met. Because vegan proteins tend to have lower DIAAS values than animal proteins, vegans may need to eat more protein than other folks.

Diagnosis And Detection Of Protein In Urine

Protein in urine, commonly referred to as proteinuria, is often a sign of the progression of a serious medical condition. Therefore it is essential to detect and diagnose this indicator as soon as possible. To detect if proteins are present in the urine, healthcare professionals will typically administer a common test known as a urinalysis. During the procedure, the technician or doctor may need to collect multiple samples of urine throughout the course of 24 hours or more. After collection, they will use sophisticated instruments that measure both levels of proteins and other chemical markers in order to accurately identify any abnormality from what would normally be considered standard.

Once protein has been detected in the urine through an analysis, doctors will typically take further steps to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging tests on renal regions may be necessary, such as X-Rays, ultrasounds or further blood tests involving kidney function and renal activity measurement, amongst other checks unique to each individuals case. Depending on various factors, after confirming a diagnosis doctors may be able to provide appropriate treatments tailored to cure or manage protein levels in pregnant women that have been identified with proteinuria.

Why Do I Need More Calcium When Pregnant

Calcium is a nutrient needed in the body to build strong teeth and bones. Calcium also allows blood to clot normally, muscles and nerves to function properly, and the heart to beat normally. Most of the calcium in your body is found inside your bones.

Your growing baby needs a considerable amount of calcium to develop. If you do not consume enough calcium to sustain the needs of your developing baby, your body will take calcium from your bones, decreasing your bone mass and putting you at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes dramatic thinning of the bone, resulting in weak, brittle bones that can easily be broken.

Pregnancy is a critical time for a woman to consume more calcium. It may help prevent high blood pressure while you’re pregnant. Even if no problems develop during pregnancy, an inadequate supply of calcium at this time can diminish bone strength and increase your risk for osteoporosis later in life.

The following guidelines will help ensure that you are consuming enough calcium throughout your pregnancy:

Weight Gain During Pregnancy

It is important to track your weight gain during pregnancy. This helps to make sure that both you and your baby are healthy. Women who gain too little weight are at risk of having a small baby . Yet women who gain too much weight have a greater risk of having the baby early or having a large baby. Gaining too much weight during pregnancy may also lead to other health problems. These may include gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and varicose veins in the mother.

Pregnant women store fat to prepare for breastfeeding. If you are below your target pregnancy weight, your health care provider will carefully track your progress. Also, ask your health care provider or a registered dietitian to help with meal planning. This will help ensure that you get the nutrients and calories you need for proper weight gain.

You need to be careful about your fish intake in pregnancy, as some of them are not safe for consumption. Fishes like tilefish, king mackerel, swordfish and shark are high in mercury levels and can affect brain development of your fetus. Make sure you are avoiding them. According to the recommendations of FDA you must consume 1 ounce of fish at this stage, but this has to be after consultation with your doctor.

If in doubt, you can consult a nutritionist to prepare a pregnancy diet chart for you.

How much protein do I need during pregnancy?

I mean it. The concept of non-essential amino acids is scientifically unproven. And yes, I was just as shocked as you are to learn this.

It turns out that extensive studies indicate that animals and humans cannot adequately synthesize NEAAs to meet optimal metabolic and functional needs under either normal or stress conditions.

Many functions of NEAAs cannot be achieved by essential amino acids. This includes: neurotransmission, regulation of acid-base balance by the kidneys, creation of bile acids, antioxidative reactions in retinal cells, heart, and skeletal muscle , conversion of folate to tetrahydrofolate in one-carbon metabolism, creation of glutathione , creation of thyroid hormones, and dozens of other functions.

Many examples of this are true in regards to prenatal nutrition, where amino acids like glycine and taurine become conditionally essential, meaning you must consume them directly from your diet during pregnancy for your body to adapt optimally to the metabolic demands of pregnancy and to support your babys growth and development. This is a huge, overlooked topic, especially for folks who do not eat adequate amounts of protein or who dont include protein from a variety of sources and therefore certain amino acids can be lacking or entirely missing from the diet.

How Much Protein Do You Need In Pregnancy

If you search online for protein requirements in pregnancy youll find mixed answers. If you go by the dietary guidelines, you can define protein needs by a gram amount per body weight this is called the recommended daily allowance . The current RDA for pregnancy is 1.1 g per kg of body weight after the first trimester .Or, you can go by the acceptable daily macronutrient range , which is given as a percentage of calories consumed. This results in a wide range of acceptable protein intake ranging from intakes close to the RDA to intakes that are more than triple the RDA. The AMDR for pregnancy is 10-35% of calories. Finally, there are blanket statements, like pregnant women need ~71 grams of protein per day or pregnant women need an extra 25 grams of protein per day in the third trimester.Generally, the most accepted standard for protein requirements is the RDA, however protein researchers point out that the RDA is set at a bare minimum level and its likely that optimal protein intake is much higher than the RDA.

As I explain in chapter 2 of Real Food for Pregnancy, the dietary guidelines for pregnancy were set with almost no data on pregnant women. Shocking, I know.

Take Home Message About Protein Needs In Pregnancy

Protein and their individual amino acids play a huge role in pregnancy health and outcomes, as well as in fetal growth and development. Weve covered some of the essential, conditionally essential and non-essential amino acids .

When conventional prenatal nutrition guidelines are taken at face value, which assume that our bodies are able to synthesize enough of any so-called non-essential amino acids from other amino acids, many women end up with suboptimal levels during pregnancy. This is especially true if their interpretation of meeting their protein needs is consuming only enough to meet the RDA, which is much too low!

Newer research has clarified that sufficient intake of a wide range of amino acids is optimal for maternal and fetal health.

Luckily, if you consume an omnivorous diet with protein intake in the newer recommendation range for pregnancy, you likely wont have to worry if youre getting enough of any particular amino acid. Thats the beauty of real food. It takes the guesswork out of it.

If you think you may be consuming a lower-protein diet or if you specifically exclude most or all animal foods from your diet , hopefully this new data will help you make an informed choice on some dietary modifications for optimal pregnancy outcomes. Until next time,
