What Foods Contain Protein

Protein is a macronutrient made up of varying combinations of amino acids and can be found in nearly all types of food.

There are actually hundreds of thousands of different types of protein, which are made up of amino acids. Luckily only those containing the 9 essential amino acids are vital for us to eat!

Proteins are considered high quality when they provide us with the amino acids each of us need to function every day.

When a food item contains all of the essential amino acids we need, its called a complete protein. Complete proteins are found in meat or animal products like eggs and dairy.

When two different foods combined meet all of our essential amino acid needs, theyre called complementary proteins.

While the most common source of protein in the diet is from meat, fish, and animal based products like milk, eggs, and dairy, protein can also be found in plants and grains.

Flour Tortillas And Corn Tortillas

Both flour and corn tortillas are fine to eat while following a high carb low-fat diet.

Corn tortillas are a bit better if weight loss is your goal.

They tend to have fewer calories and less fat.

When following a HCLF diet, make sure you dont heat them in oil and if you are making burritos, enchiladas or tacos dont add cheese.

Softshell corn tortillas are typically healthier than hard shell tortillas that are in the Mexican food sections of most stores.

Look at ingredient labels to find the ones lowest in fat.

Cons Of A 1200 Calorie High Protein Low Carb Diet

Despite the above benefits, a 1200 calories low carb high protein diet plan can have some cons and drawbacks. They include:

  • Bloating and constipation.Due to consuming small amounts of carbs, your body tends to lack fiber. Fiber plays a vital role in keeping the digestive tract flowing and healthy, and without it, you are likely to suffer from bloating and constipation.
  • Weight gain. This will most likely happen if you are not paying attention to your 1200 calorie limit. Healthy foods can make you gain weight because extra calories will still be converted into fat regardless of whether they are from healthy or unhealthy food sources.
  • Heart disease. When choosing high protein low carb foods, some people choose options that are quite high in fats such as red meat and full-fat dairy products. These foods cause high cholesterol leading to clogged arteries, heart attacks, and strokes. Always go for lean cuts of meat and low fat dairy products.
  • Increased risks of kidney stones .
  • Worsening kidney problems.Anyone with a kidney problem should not try a high protein low carbohydrate diet because your body may have trouble eliminating all the waste products of protein metabolism.

While the 1200 calorie high protein low carb diet is a relatively safe eating plan for most people, it is always a good idea to first speak to your doctor or dietitian before deciding to undertake it.

Is All That Protein Necessary

Many people with moderately active lifestyles simply dont need all the protein in very high protein, low carb diets, such as those that recommend above 0.9 grams per pound of body weight per day.

For most physically active people, a daily protein intake of 0.540.9 grams per pound of body weight is likely optimal .

Protein needs depend on your sex, body weight, age, health, activity levels, and body composition goals, so you should consult your healthcare provider if youre unsure how much you should eat.

Moreover, high protein, low carb diets arent necessary to promote overall health.

Eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, staying within your calorie needs, exercising, and reducing your intake of processed foods and added sugar are much more important to your well-being than your macronutrient ratios.

Summary

High protein, low carb diets are linked to a few downsides, including an increased risk of some cancers. Plus, most people have no need for all the protein that this eating pattern encourages.

When following a high protein, low carb diet, its important to reduce your intake of carb-rich foods. You should limit the following:

  • Grains and starches: breads, rice, pasta, baked goods, cereals, etc.
  • Sweeteners: sugar, agave, maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar, etc.
  • Sugary drinks: juice, sweetened coffee and tea, soda, sports drinks, sweetened alcoholic beverages, beer, etc.
  • Processed, high carb foods: french fries, fried chicken, pizza, chips, etc.

What Is The High Protein Low Carb Diet

The high protein, low carb diet swaps much of your daily carb intake for protein.

Although theres no set macronutrient ratio, this eating pattern is based largely on the allotments of the two diets that inspired it.

For example, low carb diets typically restrict carb intake to under 26% of total daily calories, or fewer than 130 grams of carbs for someone following a 2,000-calorie diet while very low carb diets slash that number to under 10% .

On the other hand, high protein diets often pack significantly more than the Recommended Daily Allowance for protein, providing at least 0.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight .

Some boast over 1.4 grams of protein per pound of body weight the equivalent of 204 grams of protein daily for a 150-pound person .

High protein, low carb diets may be higher in fat to compensate for the carb deficit.

For instance, a 2,000-calorie version may contain 26% carbs, 40% fat, and 34% protein equating to a daily protein intake of 170 grams for a 150-pound person.

However, while some people, such as bodybuilders and athletes, pay close attention to macronutrient ranges when following this diet, many individuals simply cut carbs and replace them with high protein foods.

Whats more, some people follow less strict versions that contain 3035% carbs although these are technically considered moderate in carbs .

6 Healthy High Fat Foods That are Low Carb

Seafood is also a great source of protein for keto dieters. It will also help us meet our omega-3 fatty acid needs for the day so that we can experience their benefits to the fullest. This is why many dieticians and doctors recommend eating two or more servings of fatty fish, like sardines and salmon, every week.

Here is a list of fish that are zero carb when bought fresh and without added ingredients:

You can also buy canned, smoked, and other processed varieties of these fish. As with processed meats, make sure there are no added ingredients that contain carbs.

The healthiest option is to buy wild caught salmon and sardines, canned or fresh without any other ingredients. These two fish tend to have the lowest mercury content along with a substantial amount of omega 3s per serving.

How Much Protein Should I Consume

Your suggested daily protein intake varies based on your goals, activity level, age, current muscle mass and current status of health. The minimum amount you need to prevent malnutrition and illness is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight according to the Recommended Dietary Allowance . However, we must mention that this RDA number was originally developed to prevent malnutrition and that the amount of protein you need to survive is different from the amount you need for optimal health and performance.

According to the RDA, a 30-year-old woman who weighs 80 kilograms , would need 64 grams of protein per day to prevent malnutrition. The equation for this is 80 kg x 0.8 g = 64 g.This number is likely too low for this individual because the RDA equation doesnt account for age, muscle mass or activity level. Sedentary, relatively healthy adults might be fine with 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight, but endurance runners or strength training athletes will require more protein to fuel their muscles and power their workouts.

Here are our recommendations:

  • Sedentary lifestyle: 11-15% of daily calories from protein

  • Someone who exercises regularly: 15-20% of daily calories from protein

  • Competitive athlete: 20% of daily calories from protein

  • Bodybuilders: 35% of daily calories from protein, or around 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram body weight

The Benefits Of A Low

For decades, the medical world has recommended a low-fat diet for losing weight, but its becoming increasingly clear that simply reducing fat/calorie intake doesnt lead to long-term weight loss. A low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet, on the other hand, has proven to be more effective for taking weight off. A low-carb diet restricts intake of refined carbohydrates and replaces them with protein and healthy fats.

The benefits of a low-carb diet dont stop at weight loss. Reducing carbohydrates can help improve other health conditions such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Low-carb diets may also raise HDL cholesterol levels if the right foods are consumed such as lean protein, healthy fats and unprocessed carbs. For example, a low-carb diet thats high in fatty meats, whole dairy and other high-fat foods can raise cholesterol, increasing the risk for heart disease and kidney problems.

Eating high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-fat foods means that you need to include a variety of healthy carbohydrates in your daily diet. Ideally, you should eat a variety of complex carbohydrates, while minimizing your animal protein and fat intake. Fortunately, this means that a wide variety of plant-based foods are available to you since these foods are typically low in fat and most are low in protein. This means that complex carbohydrates can come from fruits like:

Complex carbohydrates can also come from grains and grain-products like:

  • All-bran cereals and high-fiber breakfast cereals
  • Pita, multigrain, pumpernickel and other types of whole-grain bread
  • Oat-based products like oatmeal and oatcakes
  • Cornmeal products like polenta and porridge
  • Pasta and noodles, particularly those made with buckwheat and other whole grains
  • Brown rice and wild rice

You can also obtain complex carbohydrates from nuts, seeds and legumes, such as chickpeas, lentils, split peas, and various types of beans, including soybeans. You should be aware that these foods have more protein compared to other plant-based products. However, these plant-based protein sources are a good way to enrich your diet with both protein and carbohydrates simultaneously. If you’re uncertain about how to plan a high-carbohydrate diet, you can always use the Okinawan diet as an example, since this high-carb, low-fat, low-protein diet has well-studied health benefits.
